To live the sea means not just choosing to swim but also to float on its surface observing the land from a new viewpoint paddling on a kayak or on a stand-up paddle. Changing perspective allows you to live a unique experience in contact with Sardinia’s transparent, crystalline waters and the sweet lulling waves of the sea. Gallura Highlands is also this, as Vittoria Fresi, product manager of the new tourist promotion catalogue, tells us in this interview.
- How did your kayak adventure start?
My adventure started 12 years ago, on a midsummer’s night, when I first paddled under a full moon. It was impossible not to fall in love at first sight with this incredible means that allows you to live the sea in constant contact with the water, gliding through the waves in silence and slowly admiring the coasts from a completely different perspective. There was no way this wouldn’t become a passion of mine and then, by luck, my work.
- What is the difference between using a kayak and a stand-up paddle?
Though both activities require the use of a paddle, they are completely different sports. Both enjoyable and excellent for exploring our coasts, they have different origins and histories: SUP is great fun and more innovative and is growing in popularity, but kayaking has on its side an incredible hold on the sea, as well as speed and stowage capacity.
- Do you organise group trips? If so, what are the stages?
As the perfect paddle-tourism destination we offer a wide range of services: from hire to assistance for the self-guided, individual and group excursions, teaching and training and obviously all the related services – basically our motto is fly&paddle!
- What should the weather conditions be at sea to venture out alone with a kayak or stand-up paddle?
Though the more expert paddlers use SUP for the downwind and for surfing, it is a good idea to check the sea conditions and forecasts for a few hours afterwards every time you go in the sea, regardless of your ability or experience. Kayaks have a higher level of operativity but the Bocche di Bonifacio can prove tough going; luckily there is always slope nearby and paddling is always safe.
- Can anyone try their hand at this sport or is it necessary to have experience?
One of the characteristics that makes kayaking incredibly available is that it is suitable for all regardless of ability or experience and everyone will find it enjoyable regardless of the route taken. Obviously it is necessary to approach the sport correctly and safely with all correct information.
- Are there any structures in Santa Teresa Gallura equipped to welcome all enthusiasts of this sport?
Of course, we are currently working on guidelines to fully satisfy paddlers’ requirements as well as the public infrastructure to make a kayaking holiday an unforgettable experience.
The Galluran coast offers the most incredible views: from Capo Testa, Punta Falcone and La Licciola, paddling activities are made even more enjoyable in front of majestic granite rock formations, and a surprising kaleidoscope of colours thanks to the transparent, deep blue sea countered by the delicate hues of the Mediterranean maquis.
